A Cold Shower or No Hot Water? Here’s What to Do

A cold shower or no hot water for washing dishes is the last thing you need in Scotland’s chilly weather. If you’re a homeowner in Fife, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee, Perth, Aberdeen, or anywhere across mainland Scotland, MPH Group is here to help.

We’re a family-run, award-winning heating company based in Kirkcaldy. With in-house Gas Safe engineers covering all of Scotland, we’ve helped thousands of homes get their hot water back. This guide explains the most common causes of hot water problems, gives you quick DIY fixes to try, and shows you when it’s time to call our experts. Let’s warm things up.

Why Do I Have No Hot Water?

If your taps are running cold, something’s gone wrong with your heating system. Here are the most common causes:

  • Boiler Problems – Low pressure, error codes, or a faulty internal part.
  • Power or Fuel Issues – Power cuts, blown fuses, or an empty oil tank.
  • Frozen Pipes – Common in Scottish winters, especially the condensate pipe.
  • Hot Water Tank Problems – Immersion heater may have failed.
  • Hard Water Build-Up – Limescale in areas like Fife and Edinburgh.
  • Broken Diverter Valve – A combi boiler issue that redirects heat incorrectly.

Not Sure What System You Have?

  • Combi Boiler: One wall-mounted unit, usually no tank.
  • System or Regular Boiler: You’ll have a hot water tank in a cupboard or loft.

Either way, we’ll guide you through simple fixes anyone can try—no experience needed.

Easy DIY Fixes to Try Before Calling Us

⚠️ Safety First: Always switch off your boiler before attempting any fixes. If you’re unsure, call us.

1. Check Boiler Power and Pressure

  • Ensure boiler is on (look for digital screen or green light)
  • Check power switch and fuse box
  • Gauge should read 1–2 bars; use filling loop to top up if needed
  • Reset boiler if you see an error code

Result: If pressure or power was the issue, hot water should return within minutes.

2. Thaw Frozen Condensate Pipe (Winter)

  • Locate white pipe running from boiler to outside wall
  • If frozen, pour warm (not boiling) water or wrap with a hot water bottle
  • Dry the pipe and reset boiler

Result: Boiler should fire up again. Wrap pipe in foam insulation to prevent re-freezing.

3. Check Timer and Temperature Settings

  • Ensure hot water setting is “On” or scheduled
  • Set temperature to ~60°C

Result: Hot water should return within an hour.

4. Check the Hot Water Tank (if applicable)

  • Check immersion switch is on
  • Thermostat set to 60°C
  • Check fuse box for tripped switches

Result: Wait up to 2 hours. If still cold, immersion heater may need replacing.

5. Bleed Radiators

  • Turn off boiler and let it cool
  • Use radiator key to open valve slightly – release air until water appears
  • Close valve and repressurise boiler

Result: Improves system efficiency and can restore hot water.

Quick Troubleshooting Table
